Last week I interviewed Kitty Kulman, a civil marriage celebrant who’s been in the business for the past 10 years. In this debut episode of the Common Creative podcast, Kitty provides a transparent glance into the journey of a wedding celebrant and the experiences she encountered in a decade long adventure.
Going from the 9 to 5 into the wedding industry, Kitty began as a young celebrant where she received an influx of work after the elimination of the celebrant cap, allowing her to gain significant experience right at the start of her career. Since then she’s honed her craft and seeking a hot air balloon wedding as the next milestone in the journey.
Kitty talks about some of the key factors to look for in a marriage celebrant and gives couples some advice on how to face the challenges involved in preparing for the big day including what to look for in a celebrant. She mentions that she encourages couples to go with the flow during the ceremony and appreciate that a wedding often comes with surprises and unforeseen challenges but they are surmountable with a patient and flexible mind.
Good organisational skills are an important component in a celebrant as the number of logistics involved in a grand event can be intimidating and leaving it up to the vendors you invest may require a leap of faith but it also enables you and your partner to prioritise your own goals and focus your attention on the parts of a wedding that are solely your responsibility.
Another point she touches on that is that each celebrant comes with a unique style and persona. The takeaway is to search for an individual that feels like the right match for you and your partner. Consider that the age-old wisdom to trust one’s gut is the secret ingredient to a successful wedding and that the rest will work it’s way out naturally.
